Bay Fishing

This year's weather along the Oregon coast has been miserable to say the least.  The surf is always rough, and the wind is always high.  From January to March, I was able to go out surf fishing about 3 times.  I uploaded some old surf fishing videos to have something to upload for my subscribers.

With the weather too rough for surf fishing, I usually go fishing and crabbing in the bay.  I did a lot of crabbing this year so far.  It has been decent, and I've gotten my limit a few times despite it's the slowest time of the year for crabbing.

Last fishing & crabbing trip, I sent my gopro down along with my crab pot.  Water got inside my gopro case - mainly the lens housing.  But surprisingly, it didn't kill my gopro completely.  Sometimes it records and sometimes not.

I mostly catch rock fish & ling cod in bays.  They are fun, and really good eating.  I've also caught greenlings (a new PB of 17" caught last week).  I don't like the greenling because the meat is too mushy for me.  So back into the water it goes.  They are an awesome looking fish and they fight extremely hard.  To me, they fight much harder than the rock fish.

So, until the weather calms down a little bit on the coast, I'll be doing a lot of bay fishing.

When fishing bays, I always target structures such as rocks because that's where fish like to hold.

Knot strength chart

I got this chart from another website (bdoutdoors.com).  It shows the knot strength of various knots.  I always use the uni knot (fish n fool knot) because it's the strongest knot.  I find it very easy to tie, and have done it for so long that I get pretty fast at it.

When joining 2 lines together, I simply use the double uni.

It rarely  breaks on me.  The only times that it will break is when you snag up, and when you do, it's a chore trying to break the line loose.  It's just that strong of a knot.

If you don't know it, then I recommend practicing that uni knot and see for yourself.

I found an old newspaper that featured an article on me.  I thought I had lost it, but surprisingly found it after digging through some old files.

the article was about the 400# halibut I caught in Prince William Sound in Petersburg, Alaska back in 1993.  It happened during a time before the Gopro, and this is the only pick I have plus a color version which I keep on my PC.  I regret throwing away the negatives.  But I kept the paper in a "safer" spot now.

I really do miss Alaska a lot.  One of these days, I'll have to return there.

My how time flies..........

can this year start off any crazier for me?  we've had a lot of snow here in the willamette valley.  school was closed on the first day back.  tonight, there is suppose to be more snow.  tomorrow is my last day off and I was really looking forward to hitting the surf again.  but now, it's not looking likely.  why does bad weather always happen on my day off???  argh!!!!

I went today and was turned around by high surf.  I was going to hit the jetty, but the swells came far into the bay so I left back home with my tail between my legs.

it's already the 10th and I have yet to catch a fish in this new year.

...... angry surf, howling wind, icy roads...  we got everything here in oregon!  this is a fisherman's worst nightmare.

well .... I'm hoping that tonight's snow will be light enough that it won't impact the road to the coast.  the wind is suppose to be calmer and the surf coming in around 4-5 feet, which is fishable.  hoping mother nature plays nice tomorrow........

NEW fishing tournament script
coming soon .............

one thing I learned from last year's tournament was that my fishing tournament script sucks ass!!!!   so, I'm scrapping the old script and will make a new one.  the main issue with the old script was that people had trouble registering; not all of them, but enough for me to rethink my approach.

I'm going to remove the registration requirement, and the tournament owner can just add people when they meet them at the tournament, thus bypassing registration.  given that only about 10 - 13 people show up at these tournaments, it wouldn't be hard or time consuming to enter names manually.

one big issue with the registration in the old script was that there is a gate keeper on the registration page so it would reject all emails - unless the user gives me their email first so I can enter it in the database.  it was just a way to keep out spam bots.  basically:  IF `email`= FALSE, POOP `error code`.

the new script will not have that registration requirement.  however, the gate keeper will always be on the registration page - and I don't ever plan to remove it from everylist.  and if you do want to register for an everylist account, you must contact me first so I can add your email.

I'm still doing the script template for now, just trying to build a simpler (muuuuuuch simpler GUI) and hope to have it all coded by ......  february?

stat tuned.

2017 has started out a little slow for me.  it's about 1 week into the new year, and I haven't been fishing at all.  I got my license and shellfish permit but have yet to get my line wet.  I did have opportunities to go, but it was too icy (last night it got to 17 degrees!).  the snow from the last storm is still on the ground, and we are expecting more snow tomorrow morning.  my problem is that it's dangerous to go over the mountain pass on my way to the coast, especially when it's snowing and then it freezes at night.

so, mother is in control and she tells me when I can or cannot go.  I don't think I'm alone.

it's safe to say fishing has a really slow start this year.  I think to keep the videos going, I will try to do some .... (yawn) .... reel & tackle reviews.

for surf fishing this year, (as I've said before), I'm going to have 2 tournaments.  the date isn't set yet, but the places I will hold them will be ona beach state park and siletz bay.  I've fished ona before, and did ok there.  but I've yet to fish the siletz bay; and people tell me it's a good spot.  last year, we average about 10 people per tournament, which is not too bad.  I hope that that we will have a better turn out this year.  I can't wait to see all the new faces!

for next week, I'm going to try my luck at bass fishing.  it's winter now so I have very little hope, but I'm going to try.  I never caught a bass in the winter, so this will be a first.  they will be holding in deep water and are very sluggish.  people tell me a stick of dynamite works best this time of year so I'll have to try that.

anyways, stay tuned.

Merry Christmas, everyone!!!

Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays and getting stuffed, or drunk.  I think someone slipped some booze into the eggnog again......

It was a great year in terms of fishing.  I held several surf fishing competition and enjoyed meeting new people.  Looking forward to next year to make things bigger and better and brighter than this year.

One thing I would like to do next year is catch either a salmon or steelhead in Oregon.  It has been about 13 years since I left Alaska, where I salmon fished all the time.  It's been a long break and I need to get back into it.  Hoping next year will be it.

Xmas day surf fishing report::::  I did went fishing today to celebrate Christmas, because that's what fishing addicts do, but I got 1 TINY redtail.  ONE!  I actually forgot my bait at home!! Can you believe that??? ME!  PERCH KING - forgets BAIT!!!  WOW... not only is my hair going but my mind along with it!  I felt embarrassed texting one of my friend about it, and luckily he had some and best of all he was 3 minutes away from where I was fishing.  But, I managed to get only 1 redtail after that ordeal.

rating: 0 ...(as in ZERO)
weather:  super nice - 40 degrees and sunny
surf: ~ 6 foot swells.  ....... uh..... 6 foot or higher gets too hairy
note: wind was calm, surf was quite uncomfortable where it surge too high onto the beach, which didn't allow me to go too deep.  warm and sunny, just no fish :(

Anyways, tight lines and happy holidays to all!!!

not a whole lot to report lately .............  went over to newport for some jetty fishing.  unfortunately, I got skunked but enjoyed the day nonetheless.  Tom got one ling cod but it was under sized ~ 15" about.  he lost a really nice one too on the jetty.  weather was nice in the morning, but got pretty ugly around noon when the torrential rain and wind arrived.

overall a pretty slow day, but fun just hanging out in the outdoor with friends.  I'm already planning for next week.

I really need to go fishing!!  I have't caught a fish in over a week!  motherf.......r that is a long as time!  I'm getting restless and jittery.  my hands are shaking ... and I think I'm losing more hair follicles.  I have a couple of reels in front of me and I'm spinning them, ... and staring at them with much fervor.  I'm hoping that by spinning the reels, it will satisfy my fishing crave.   I was washing dishes today and even thought about filling up my sink with water and cast a lure in there!

sometimes I hear the fish calling me ... their voices carrying over with the  cold wind blowing from the coast.  they're saying "pk.... come and catch us.  hurry!  we're all fed up and we're big and fat!  like your wife!"

man!  what must I do?....  my hands are even trembling as I write this.  I think I have the perch syndrome.  and I thik a few bottles of heineken will solve it ... just for now though.

1 million channel views

(original post 8/8/2016)

big milestone for me today - broke the 1 million view mark!

to be honest, I did not expect this train ride would get this far, yet it did and I'm giddy as a redtail on crack.  fishing has and always will be my passion and escape.  even more exciting is showing people how to catch fish.  I've met some great people along the way, people who have taught me some great things.

one area that I did not expect that I ended up doing and enjoying is hosting fishing tournaments.  I'm about to host my 5th tournament this coming saturday.  it's a natural path that I would eventually discover sooner or later.  it's great seeing the smiles on people's face when they catch their first surf perch.  with this, I plan to focus a lot of time to hosting many more tournaments.

passion and knowledge is meant to be shared - that's how you progress in life.

I just wish I had hopped on this train much sooner.

anyhow, it can only go up from now.  and I want to thank ALL of my subscribers for their support.

until the next milestone --- tight lines!

well, it's time for an update on things.  first off, my site (everylist.com) is back up - finally!  I tossed the old script and redid (almost) everything.  sadly, I didn't preserve those old posts :(

it's actually not quite done yet as I have a lot left to do; so you will see some minor changes in the future.  I made this site because I don't use facebook (and never plan to!), and I wanted something simple for me to just update my hobby and share my fishing adventure.

on to my youtube channel ....... did I just reach 1.5 million channel views?  man, how time flies!  it has been a really fun ride and I appreciate every and all of my subscribers for that achievement.  I got so many more miles to walk, and so many more videos to upload.  I have been meaning to do more gear / tackle videos, and cooking videos, and many have asked for a 'how to fillet' video.  but I'm a little time impaired right now as I try to raise a family and work a full time job.  but I will do my best to finish those said videos, and more!

also, I just got a brand new outboard motor for my boat so I will have a video of that coming up soon.  I wanted this motor for a very long time, as it would open up a lot of new waters for me to fish!  I can't wait!

as we go into the middle of fall term, fishing will get a little slower for me.  I hope to use this slow time to make more gear/tackle videos, maybe some cooking videos as well.  so stay tuned.

hope to see you on the water!  tight lines!!
