Next surf fishing tournament on Saturday, 9/22

by: PK. 8/22/2018

This is tentative for now. I would like to host one more surf fishing tournament before I join the Dark Side ......... I mean, move to Californ-I-Ay-bro! There are several things that must first fall into place before it happens. As of right now, it's looking most likely.

I will know more as the date approaches, and will keep you updated. So stay tuned.

Tournament info:

Date: 9/22
Location: Gearhart beach - click here to see map
Entry fee: $20
Check in time: 6:30 AM (you can start fishing after you check in)
End time: 11:30 AM
Prize pool: 60%, 40%, 30%, 20%, random drawings, plus more
Notes: possible cookout after the tourney. Please check back here often for updates. The biggest thing here is the weather. If it rains, there won't be a cookout. The tourney also depends 100% on the weather too - especially the surf condition. If it's too high such as 5 foot or more, it will be cancelled.

I'm moving to California! :(

by: PK. 8/21/2018

I am truly sad while I type this announcement, but I am moving to Calfifornia at the end of September. I turned in my resignation to my job last week (after 13 years) - and it's a difficult choice. I'm going to be with my wife and son, so I'm putting family first. I've always hated California with a bitter passion for many reasons, so this move is like chewing on broken glass.

My wife and I are closing on a house in Lathrop (Tracy area). I don't know if there are any good fishing in that area, so I got a lot of research to do.

However, there is good news!! The move isn't permanent, and I hope to return to Oregon in 3, maybe 3.5 years at the most. So I'll be in a tunnel for a little while, then come out of the tunnel when I return to my beloved state Oregon.

Sometimes in life, you must take one step back in order to move forward.

Surf fishing tournament was great! Video coming soon!

by: PK. 8/18/2018

Tournament was great! Many people caught fish, with the biggest redtail being 2.86#! What a monster! Video coming in a few days. Thanks to all who came (32 total), I had a blast meeting new people - which is the best part about these tournaments and is why I host them.

Biggest fish!! 2.8#

See you all at the tournament tomorrow!!!

The tournament is a GO! See you all there!!

Coos Bay crabbing report

by: PK. 7/25/2018

Soaked some pots today in Coos Bay for dungeness. It was poor, only got 5 dungeness and 3 red rock crabs. However, others did better than us. I could've gotten more but due to time constraint, I had to leave after 2 hours.

Oregon clam digging

by: PK. 7/22/2018

With the redtails not biting, I went out and dug some clams with a friend. We did great and got ouWr limit of 20 clams each in a little over 30 minutes. These clams were huge! And to be honest, they don't taste as good as I had anticipated. And I actually like the small clams you buy from the grocery store more. I thought these big ones were a little gamie.

Where are the redtails?

by: PK. 7/22/2018

I really can't remember the last time I went surf fishing and had a good day. This year has been terrible for me. Surf fishing has been my bread and butter for my YouTube channel, and it's my favorite fish to catch of all time. My luck has turned for the worse in the last 12 months. The places I go to near Newport has been really poor, compared to years ago when I have good success each trip. I'm not sure what it is ....... the weather maybe? Or, it's the higher amount of pressure? I've noticed that years before when I surf fished, I don't see many people in my favorite spots. Nowadays, it's pretty common to see people surf fishing in those spots I frequent. I wonder if it's bad because of pressure. Not sure what it is .....

It is why I haven't uploaded any surf fishing videos to my channel. It's frustrating, but it just might be a bad cycle at the moment. Hopefully, fall time will pick back up for me. I've also began looking south to see if I can discover new spots. Bandon and Port Orford are 2 places I got my eye on for this coming August as places I'd like to try.

My biggest fish ever!

by: PK. 7/10/2018

Here is an old newspaper article The Petersburg Pilot ran on me when I caught a giant halibut in Alaska. Unfortunately, I caught it during a time when the Gopro camera wasn't invented yet. I did take photos but I was never good at keeping things. I do have an old scan of the image.

Check those swell reports before you surf fish!!!

by: PK. 7/9/2018

Checking swell reports is the most crucial step you must take in order to stay safe while surf fishing in Oregon. The Oregon coast is brutal and unforgiving at times. Waves are big and powerful, and they come without warning. Last year, several people died when a storm with 60 foot (!) waves made landfall. Many days before heading out, I check magic seaweed and solspot to plan my trips, and I continue to check these websites until the night of. It's easy to do, especially with today's technology. Look for swells that are 5 feet or under. 2-3 foot is ideal.

Upcoming surf fishing tournament on Saturday, July 21

by: PK. 6/23/2018

It is tentative for now

I'm looking to reschedule the surf fishing tournament to be held on Saturday, July 21 at Horsfall Beach in Coos Bay. As of now, it's tentative, and I'm going to try hard to make that happen. I just need to get approved time off from work and get a permit from ODFW and we're good. Of course, this will also depend on if the weather will cooperate or not. If it's rough and dangerous, then it won't happen.

Due to work conflict, I'm unable to host this tournament. Rescheduling in progress!
Surf Fishing Tournament CANCELLED - Get together instead

by: PK. 6/21/2018

Due to not getting a tournament permit in time, I'm cancelling the tournament on Saturday 6/23. However, I will be there at Ona Beach to fish anyways. I will be there around 6:30 AM. I know many of you have emailed me about getting together, so this is a great opportunity to meet and greet. I would come early to give yourself time for setting up.

Surf Fishing Tournament UPDATE 6/20

by: PK. 6/20/2018

On hold - pending permit from ODFW - UPATE TOMORROW

I just got back from California visiting my wife and son. As for the tournament, I have to call ODFW tomorrow to see if I can still get a permit this late for it (they require 2 weeks in advance). As of right now, I think it's not looking likely at all due to my being late on getting the permit. I had tried to apply for it before I left for California but their registration script had a missing "year" field so I couldn't register. It's fixed now, but I'm a little late. So ......... hopefully, the phone call tomorrow goes well. Stay tuned.

One of my biggest redtcail surf perch

by: PK. 5/22/2018

I caught this big redail a few days ago. She was about 2.2# - for a redtail, that's a good size. Most of them are in the 11", 1 pound range. I didn't take photos because I was in a hurry to release her. I knew keeping her out of the water for too long will make her suffocate, so I rushed to get her on camera and put her back in the surf.

2.2# redtail
