A Guide For Beginners

About the author: My name is PK and I've been surf fishing on the Oregon coast for many years now. I run a YouTube channel called Oregon Life, teaching my knowledge to other anglers. I wanted to start this page to help others catch more surf perch.

Most important point

  • It is important that you check the swell forecast before you go surf fishing because the waves on the Oregon coast is no joke. It is rough, and extremely dangerous!
  • Look for swells that are 5 feet or under, 6 for the limit.
  • Also note, swell period is also important to consider, as longer periods means the swells have more energy.

HOOKS
Depending on the bait I use, ranges from a #6 to a #1 hook. When using clam necks or live bait, I prefer the bigger hooks of size 1. For sandworms, I use a #4. For Gulp shrimp, I use a #2. It's important to match the hook with the size of your bait.

REEL
  • Size 5000 reel from Shimano
  • I'm a Shimano guy, and I prefer their reels. They are tough and durable
  • My favorite is the Shimano Vanford: https://amzn.to/4h9WvCJ

LEADER
  • I use mono leader that's about 7-8 ft
  • 12# - 15#
  • Note that the 15# mono line is a little thick for some hooks because you have to double the line when threading it through the eye for your dropper loop. In this case, I use a

SINKER
I use a 2 oz disc sinker since it tends to roll less, than say, a pyramid sinker - which has a higher profile.

Methods I use when surf fishing
Technique?
After casting out my bait, I tighten up my line slack and pause for a few minute. Then I slowly reel in, and then pause. I simply repeat this method. The surf perch usually bite on the pause.
How far do cast out?
I just make a normal cast, and you don't have to try to wing it out to the middle of the ocean. Most of the time, they bite close to me - about 20-30 feet in front of me.
